Domestic violence is a crime involving a pattern of abusive behavior
in an intimate relationship where one person tries to control and dominate
the other. The abusive behavior may be physical, sexual, psychological,
and/or verbal.
The victim may feel scared, confused, dependent, and insecure.
The FBI estimates that a woman is beaten every 9 seconds.
According to the Bureau of Justice statistics, approximately 95% of
victims of domestic violence are women.
In 1991, the Surgeon General reported that "Battering is the single
largest cause of injury to women nationally, occurring more often than
auto accidents, muggings and rapes combined."
It is estimated that a minimum of 3.3 million children witness domestic
violence each year.
Jaffe, Wolfe, Wilson Children of Battered Women, 1990
Boys who witness family violence are more likely to batter their female
partners as adults than boys raised in non-violent homes. Girls who
witness their mother's abuse have a higher rate of being battered as adults.
"Battered Families ... Shattered Lives"
Georgia Dept. of Human Resources 1992
Domestic Violence costs employers $3 to $5 billion annually
